Obituary

Alan (Skip) Kohl 89, of Montesano, WA passed away at home on November 22,
2022. Skip was born on April 20, 1933 to Herald and Alice Tebb Kohl in San
Angelo, Texas. He enjoyed telling people he was born in San Angelo because it
had nothing to do with the rest of his life. He lived in Sumner, WA before moving
to Queen Anne Hill in Seattle, WA where he attended grade school. His family
then relocated to Manhattan Beach California where he enjoyed his teenage years
and would graduate from Redondo Union High School in 1951. Skip also
graduated from the Evergreen State College in 1979.
After high school Skip joined the Navy and served his years overseas in Japan
and at the Naval Airbase on Whidbey Island, WA. He told great stories of his
adventures hitchhiking Highway 99 between Whidbey Island and Manhattan
Beach. Skip then attended El Camino Jr. College and would work different jobs in
the Los Angeles area before moving back to Seattle, WA, where he met and later
married his wife of 60 years, Alice Marie Johnson in October of 1962.
They moved to the Grays Harbor Area in 1965 where Skip started work for the
Lamb Grays Harbor Company in Hoquiam, WA. Through his years there he
worked in several departments, ending his career as an Estimator before retiring
in 1997. It was at Lamb Grays Harbor where Skip became an avid runner. Every
day at noon he went to the Hoquiam YMCA and would run the streets of Hoquiam.
He also trained and completed the Capitol City Marathon in 1985.
Skip was a long-time member of Saint Andrews Episcopal Church. He treasured
spending time with family and friends and was a season ticket holder of UW
Husky Football for 30 years. Skip had a very vivid, descriptive memory when
talking about his past. When he would tell a story, he made you feel as if you
were there and knew the people from his past personally. He will truly be missed.
Skip is survived by his wife Alice of Montesano; son Eric Kohl of Montesano;
daughter Kristen Marino of Everett; sister Molly Ugles of Bainbridge Island;
brother Steven Kohl of Bremerton; and granddaughter Sela Marino of Everett. He
is preceded in death by both his parents and his brother Michael Kohl.
Memorials may be made to Saint Andrews Episcopal in Aberdeen, WA and the
Montesano Fire Department.
