Obituary

James Robert Johnson, a longtime resident of the Wishkah Valley and a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2026, at Tacoma General Hospital. He was 78 years old.

James was born on July 5, 1948, in Aberdeen, Washington, to Robert and Esther Johnson. He was raised in Aberdeen and graduated from Weatherwax High School. On July 24, 1993, he married Diana “DeeDee” (Ditton) Johnson in Aberdeen. Together, they made their home in the Wishkah Valley.

James proudly served his country in the United States Army from September 25, 1967, through September 24, 1970, including service during the Vietnam war. His military honors included the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Aircraft Crewman Badge, Army Commendation Medal, and Bronze Star Medal. His service was an important part of his life. He was a part of the 82nd Airborne Division but was most proud of being involved in the 101st Dust Off, which was picking up wounded soldiers from a helicopter off the battlefield.

After his military service, James built a career on the water. He commercially fished for more than 30 years, fishing throughout the Puget Sound and San Juan Islands aboard the Fort Bragg. He also spent several years fishing in Alaska. After retiring from commercial fishing, James worked for Lakeside Industries for several years.

James was active in his community and was a member of the Vets Club, Finn Hall, the Eagles, and the 40 et 8. He enjoyed attending car shows around the state with DeeDee and treasured the time they spent together on their boat, the Wave Dancer, cruising the San Juans. Whether he was on the water, at a car show, or spending time with those he loved, James enjoyed making memories with family and friends.

James will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 33 years, Diana Johnson of the Wishkah Valley; children Brandon Johnson and Keri (Aaron) Stephenson of Plano, TX; seven grandchildren, Aaron (Ashley) Bieker, Trevor (Kylie) Bieker, Mina (Elijah) Hanson, Chandler (Ali) Hanson, Deandra (Dee) Stephenson, Jade (Allison) Johnson, and Landyn Johnson; and one great-grandchild, Noah. He also leaves behind many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

James leaves behind a legacy of service, hard work, love of the outdoors and water, and devotion to his family. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wishkah Fire Department #10, 4660 Wishkah Road, Aberdeen, WA 98520.

A celebration of life will be planned for a later date.
